Finally, the first game of the most exciting ICC Champions Trophy 2017 is done and dusted and without any surprise, the hosts England thrashed Bangladesh after an impressive display from the evergreen Joe Root and Alex Hales after some death bowling show from Plunkett.
Initially, England won the toss and asked Bangladesh to bat first. Though Bangladesh lost the toss, they got off to a flashy start as their left-handed openers added 56 runs for the opening wicket before losing Soumya Sarkar (28) after scoring a poor shot in Ben Stokes’ over.
The other opener Tamim Iqbal has been in terrific form for Bangladesh as he kept England bowlers on their toes throughout the innings as he went on to score a stunning century in an emphatic fashion by stitching the highest partnership for Bangladesh 3rd wicket with Mushfiqur (79).
The 128 run knock from Tamim Iqbal shouldered Bangladesh to a massive total of 305 runs on the board. In reply to the chase, England got an early jolt as they lost Jason Roy cheaply but the terrific partnership from Alex Hales (95) and Joe Root steadied the ship for England before the skipper Eoin Morgan accomplishing the task for England.
Joe Root brought up his 10th ODI century during the course of the chase and also scored his highest ever individual score in the 50-over International game. The heroics of Joe Root helped England to register the highest ever chase by a team in ICC Champions Trophy.
As always people are swift to make their move on the Twitter to express their views on the game. Here are the best tweets:
