In the first game of the weekend double header, we have got Rajasthan Royals taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore in another evening game. The Royale battle is again expected to be an exciting one since both the teams have few quality batsmen on display. Talking about their head to head record, RR has a small edge over RCB with 10 wins to RCB’s 9 in 21 games but these head to head records only mean a little. In this article, we take a look at players battle and some interesting match-ups between both sides.
AB de Villiers & Virat Kohli vs Leg spin
In the last match, RCB management sent Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube to bat ahead of AB de Villiers which was a surprising decision but the logic behind that they wanted to protect AB against leg spin, something which has bothered him in the recent past. With Shreyas Gopal and Rahul Tewatia, Rajasthan Royals will have couple of leg spinners at least and they can also bring Mayank Markande to further exploit this little weakness of AB de Villiers who got out to leg spin 8 times in last 2 seasons but who else struggles against leg spin apart from AB? It’s Virat Kohli.
He might not have got out to leg spin a lot of times this season but his cautious approach in the middle overs against spin, particularly leg spin, has hurt RCB chances with bat badly. Even in the previous game, he could only manage to score 31 balls in 32 balls once the powerplay was over and that was mainly due to two leg spinners bowling in tandem. It will be interesting to see how he plays leg spin today.
Virat Kohli vs Jofra Archer
But before RCB captain gets tested against leg spin, he will have to give a stern test against Jofra Archer given that the RCB openers let him bat against him. In the other game played earlier this season, Kohli was cautious against Archer who had bowled 6 dot balls to him in the 7 balls he had bowled to him conceding just 1 run. RCB were chasing a mediocre total in that game but if things are different this time, if RCB have to chase or set a big total, Kohli might have to take risks against him and that may create the chances of Archer getting Kohli out, a wish he had openly expressed before 2019 World Cup.
Jos Buttler vs Chris Morris
It goes without saying that Jos Buttler will be RCB’s main threat in this game once again. Rajasthan Royals best batsman has got good starts and played some crisp shots in every game to show he is in good form but he has got out in 20s a lot and today he could be getting those big runs. The contest between Buttler and Chris Morris will be an interesting one to watch as the right handed batsman has an excellent record against RCB most valuable fast bowler. In IPL, Buttler has scored 37 runs after facing only 17 runs bowled by Morris to him while in international T20s, it’s 33 runs in 29 balls. Morris has never got him out in T20 format and that’s what makes this contest worth to have an eye upon. However, Buttler will be tested by Saini and probably Washington Sundar before Morris can target him.
