Even though Argentina is going to play one of their most important game in the world cup history against Nigeria, their team seems to be in complete chaos leading upto the game.
The senior players including Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano are particularly not happy with their coach Jorge Sampaoli. Mascherano is said to be the main man behind the revolt. The players are not happy with the clueless strategy with the coach is playing. Sampaoli changed the formation from 4 at the back against Iceland to 3 at the back against Croatia causing a humiliating defeat of 3-0 against Croatia.
However, Nigeria win over Iceland has made life easier for the Argentines as they just need to beat Nigeria and hope for Croatia to beat Iceland or in case 2, they just need to win big against Nigeria but the problem with coach doesn’t seem to be going away anywhere.
Messi & Co demanded the sacking of former Chile Manager Jorge Sampaoli in a meeting held at Friday night with Argentina Football Association president Claudio Tapia. They also want Jorge Barruchaga, 1986 WC winning midfielder and currently the general manager of the side to replace Sampaoli.
It was also claimed that the striker Cristian Pavos and Mascherano himself came to blows in the dressing room when the coach was lashing out verbally at the blunder made by the 36 years old Goalkeeper Caballero.
However, Sampaoli was told to leave the Argentine squad just after the world cup but the players demand an exit as soon as possible and they don’t even want to play under him. It is said that the players want to have their own formation, idea and strategy in the game against Nigeria although, Sampaoli can sit on the bench if he wants. Removing Sampaoli at this moment would mean giving him up claims for a pay off.
Argentina FA is currently on the back foot while the players being at the top despite their poor execution at the field. Senior players like Messi, Aguero and Mascherano might even opt to sit out of the Nigeria game if the association doesn’t listen to them as soon as possible. That would probably mean an end to Messi’s international career as beating Nigeria without these key players will be close to impossible. That would also mean a humiliating exit from the WC which will only lead to the havoc, finger pointing and blame game among everyone.
On the other hand, Iceland and Nigeria would be keenly observing all the drama as they’re strongly contending to go to the next round. Football and particularly Messi fans will be hoping that all the drama gets sorted out before the match so that the players can play upto the potential.
