In the 50th league match of IPL 2020, Kings XI Punjab takes on Rajasthan Royals in a game which holds a lot of importance in the points table. Rajasthan Royals have to win both their games to reach 14 points while Kings XI Punjab can afford to lose today but then, they will have to depend on the result of other teams which is something they’d definitely like to avoid and hence, it’s almost a must win game for them too.
In this article, we take a look at players battle, match-ups and few other talking points as well.
Head to Head record
The overall head to head record favors the Royals by 11-9 but that’s not something which tells you a lot. The only thing it tells you that both the teams are neck and neck when it comes to rivalry and even their first game this season was a tight contest which saw the rise of Rahul Tewatia from nowhere. KXIP have the momentum after winning 5 games in a row but the Royals will also take huge confidence from their victory against a side like Mumbai Indians.
Jofra Archer vs Chris Gayle
This is a classic battle between a veteran and a youngster risen through ther ranks, both carrying their teams in the best ways they could. Jofra will bowl to the duo of Rahul – Mandeep or Rahul – Mayank up front with the new ball in Abu Dhabi, a surface which aids the new ball bowling and hence the contest between Gayle and Archer in the powerplay is very much possible.
Statistically so far, Gayle has scored 35 runs against him in the 25 balls he has faced off him in T20 cricket while Archer has dismissed him twice. The contest looks even here too.
Jos Buttler vs Leg Spin
Whenever RR plays, the focus is on how Jos Buttler bats and even though apart from two games, his performance hasn’t been quite like himself, he has always possesses a huge threat to the opponents. In this game where he will be batting in the middle order, his own main threat would be leg spin duo of Ravi Bishnoi and Murugan Ashwin.
Not to forget, along with all the strengths Jos Buttler possesses, one considerable weakness he has is against leg spin and KXIP have two quality leg spinners. These two same leg spinners have made sure RCB had held AB de Villiers back in a match earlier at Sharjah.
Royals could again repeat the same move of sending Rahul Tewatia up to counter both these leggies but not sure how much would that move work as KXIP too will come up prepared for this expecting something like it.
Equation of the result
The next topic is how will the result of this match would impact other teams. If KXIP wins this game, they will reach to 14 points in the points table and Rajasthan Royals will be out of the competition.
If RR wins this game, 3 teams will reach to 12 points and SRH could also join them with 12 points if they win tomorrow. That would open up the points table again.
