IPL : 5 highest Team scores in competition history

The T20 has been largely a bat dominated format and IPL has only gone on to only make it difficult for bowlers. The impact of IPL has been immense and not just in T20 cricket but nowadays we also huge scores being made in ODIs too and a huge credit for that goes to IPL as well.

IPL has so far seen 15 scores of 225 and above with one score over 250 which was put up by RCB in 2013. We take a look at 5 highest team scores ever made in IPL history.

263 : Royal Challengers Bangalore – 2013

Royal Challengers Bangalore have had a dynamic batting order over the years and it’s a no secret. They have more scores of over 225 than anyone else and when it comes tot he highest score in IPL, it belongs tot his franchise only. Royal Challengers put up a score of 263-5 back in the 2013 edition of IPL against Pune Warriors India.

After being put to bat after losing the toss, RCB got a sublime start and they never looked beyond. Chris Gayle set the record for highest individual score in T20 cricket which is still unbroken and that propelled RCB to a humungous score of 263-5. Gayle scored 175*(66) while AB De villiers also chipped in with 8 balls 31 in the end and RCB won the match by a huge margin of 130 runs.

248 : Royal Challengers Bangalore – 2016

This one match will always be remembered for an epic partnership between two of the greatest batsmen of this generation Virat Kohli and AB De villiers. Batting first, they both stitched up a partnership of 229 runs which is the highest ever partnership for any wicket in IPL. The bowlers of Gujarat Lions had no answer to their onslaught as both AB and Virat got to their 100s respectively.

It was the first incident in IPL history when two batsmen from a team got to their respective centuries. AB stayed unbeaten on 129 while Virat got out on 109 in the final over. Gujarat were no where in the chase of 249 as they got bundled out on mere 104 giving RCB a 144 runs massive victory.

246 : Chennai Super Kings – 2010

Chennai Super Kings comes across as a side with very strong spin bowling department these days but they have always had a very measured strength in all departments which is why they feature at 3 in this list of top scores by a team. It was back in 2010 when CSK demolished Royals bowling albeit the match got very close and they somehow managed to win by 23 runs.

As CSK captain MS Dhoni won the toss, it was Murali Vijay who showcased his T20 skills as the elegant Tamilnadu batsman scored an authoritative 127 from 56 balls while South African all rounder Albie Morkel propelled his side to 246 with his unbeaten 34 balls 61. The reply from RR was brisk and they were very much in hunt all the time but CSK somehow managed to pull off a 23 runs win.

245 : Kolkata Knight Riders : 2018

It was Indore, it had to be a run fest with such a flat deck and small boundaries and that’s exactly what happened when Kolkata Knight Riders hammered Kings XI Punjab bowlers for fun on a very small ground. Unlike the other examples, this performance from KKR didn’t come on the back of individual brilliance but everyone chipped in with some contribution to take KKR to 245-6.

After being put to bat first, KKR got a great start as Sunil Narine scored a quickfire 75(36). Due to the able support from captain Dinesh Karthik (50 off 23) and an expectedly great finish from Russell, KKR posted tournament’s fourth highest team total. In reply, Punjab did threaten the score but they soon ran out of the gas and lost the match by 31 runs.

240 : Chennai Super Kings : 2008

IPL had already started with a bang when Brendon McCullum set the stage on fire in the inaugural game of the tournament. CSK, in the second match continued the momentum of the league as they scored 240-5 which is still the 5th highest team score in this competition. After McCullum’s 100, tournament saw yet another 100 just in the very next match as Mike Hussey, CSK opener slammed a scintillating 54 balls 116 to help CSK reach this score against Kings XI Punjab.

During the chase, KXIP stayed in the game for most of the time but it was a herculean task for them and in the end, they were restricted to 207-4 despite all their efforts.
