IPL 2020 : Orange Cap and Purple Cap contenders at half way stage

The league stage of Dream11 IPL has completed its half way stage and at this stage, three teams are Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore are running away with all the show. However, Delhi and Mumbai are looking too good not to win the trophy while RCB too have had their best ever start in IPL and they are on track of having a good IPL season. In the points table, it’s MI which is at the top followed by DC and RCB.

Teams like KXIP, CSK and RR are struggling so far even though RR started their campaign with 2 straight wins. In this article, we will look at who are the top contenders to get orange cap and purple cap at the end of the IPL.

Orange Cap

The race for orange cap is very tight, as you would expect in a tournament with all the quality batsmen but so far KL Rahul has seemed to have a stronger grip at it as he is 50 runs ahead of the next best Mayank Agarwal who has 337 runs in the tournament so far. We have Faf Duplesis at 3 (307 runs), David Warner at 4 (284 runs), Jonny Bairstow at 5 (280 runs) and Virat Kohli at 6 (254 runs) but the gap within these batsmen is very narrow and one good performance from any of these batters can fluctuate things. However, in the long run, the orange cap race will also upon the ability of batsmen to play spin bowling since the pitches are getting slower with each passing game.

KL Rahul is still a strong contender knowing how good is he against spin bowling. The chances of Bairstow and Duplesis look slim in the long run since their teams are struggling at the moment. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers can certainly challenge anyone for that award. Here are these 5 players whom we think can win the orange cap at the end of the season.

Top 5 orange cap contenders Prediction

  • KL Rahul
  • AB de Villiers
  • Virat Kohli
  • Shreyas Iyer
  • Mayank Agarwal

Purple Cap

As far as purple cap is concerned, Kagiso Rabada is the absolute front runner in that race with 17 wickets already at the half way stage and even though it is never wise to have any straight forward prediction in cricket, the purple cap sure seems to be going to Rabada’s house if he he plays the entire tournament. He is a consistent performer who takes at least a wicket in every match. Jasprit Bumrah is at 2 with 11 wickets. Trent Boult has also taken 11 wickets but he is at 3 because of his average. Rashid Khan and Yuzvendra Chahal are at 4 and 5 respectively with 10 wickets apiece. Jofra Archer and Mohammed Shami are 2 other contenders who can get close to Rabada because they have this habit of picking wickets. However, at this time it is safe to say Rabada is miles ahead in the purple cap race.

  • Jasprit Bumrah
