IPL 2020 : CSK rejects the idea of playing without any overseas player

IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings has refused the idea of playing the tournament without any overseas player due to the travel ban in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. The franchise said it would become like a domestic tournament like Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the absence of any foreign player.

“CSK is not keen to do an IPL with only Indian players. That way it would be playing another Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (domestic T20 competition). The franchise has not been in touch with the BCCI of late as the situation is worsening,”  – A CSK source was quoted as saying by PTI

Earlier, the CEO of another IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals had shown his keenness to play the league with Indian players only. He wasn’t worried about the unavailability of foreign players as he felt there is enough talent among Indian players only to have a seamless and competitive IPL if the tournament takes place in future.

” We are open to an Indian only IPL “, says Rajasthan Royals CEO

In the latest IPL updates, BCCI looks keen on organizing IPL even in September- October if the WT20 2020 gets postponed due to the virus but if it doesn’t take place, BCCI will face a massive financial hit.

“The board will take a revenue hit of Rs 4000 crore if it doesn’t happen. The board will be in a big problem,” the board treasurer Arun Dhumal earlier told media.

According to the sources, it is pointless to even discuss about the IPL at the moment as there is very little possibility of it starting in the near future as the cases of Corona are rising rapidly in India everyday and it doesn’t look like improving anytime soon.

There is also an option of conducting the IPL outside India and Sri Lanka Cricket has even offered to host the tournament which was later declined by BCCI as they’d want to host it in India in any likely scenario but for the IPL to happen with foreign players, travel restrictions, which are currently in place, will have to be eased.
