” I had self doubts but RCB backed me a lot ” : Devdutt Padikkal on how RCB’s backing helped him being the highest run scorer in his debut season

It was a dream come true moment for Devdutt Padikkal when he outscored the likes of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Aaron Finch in his first ever IPL season. Padikkal was coming off a very successful domestic season and people had heard his name quite a lot but performing in IPL was a totally different & bigger challenge and Padikkal came out on top of that challenge as well.

Devdutt scored 473 runs in IPL 2020 at an average of 31 and strike rate of 125. He scored more runs than both Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers who are the two finest batsmen world has ever seen. And on top of that, he had no IPL experience prior to this season as he was playing his first IPL makes this performance even special.

However, this whole journey was filled with lots of challenges, self doubts and fear of failure but RCB backing Devdutt at every stage really helped him stay focused and not to worry about anything that can affect his performance. Talking with famous cricket commentator Aakash Chopra, he talked about the challenges he faced in his first IPL season and how RCB management, who is infamous for not backing players enough helped him overcome these challenges.

” After I got out early in the second match (against KXIP where he scored only 1 run), my mind allowed a bit of self-doubt to creep in. I felt some pressure thinking what if the first match was only a fluke. You can’t afford to relax in IPL as every match is important there. If the team doesn’t get the good start in opening, it affects the whole team a lot. I had that pressure of giving good starts to the team but I knew coaches and management are fully backing me and I had runs under my belt in domestic cricket so I was ready for the challenge, I was ready for facing anything that was thrown to me, ” Devdutt Padikkal said.

Padikkal had his shares of ups and downs throughout the tournament, as you would expect from any player, especially from someone who was playing only his first season but credit to him, he dealt with them well.

I was RCB fan from the start

Devdutt also talked about his early days when he used to be an avid supporter of RCB even when he lived in Hyderabad and how it used to disappoint him when people kept off writing RCB so early. It made him proud that RCB reached the playoffs thanks to his contribution and people couldn’t write off RCB early again.

” In a way, we all were really proud of what we had achieved because people used to write off RCB very early every time. Even as a fan, when I used to watch RCB, i felt that the team was giving up too early. I always wanted to play for RCB, it was my first priority. I always supported RCB right from the beginning and now playing for this side is a great honor for me, ” Devdutt added.
