Ranji Trophy is currently is in its 9th and final round where Karnataka are locking horns with Baroda in Bengaluru in one of the matches. It’s a game of utmost importance for the hosts as they need to avoid a defeat to qualify for the next round. They are doing fairly decently in the contest after dismissing Baroda for only 85 in the first inning.
However, the match isn’t trending because of the normalcy of the game. It is in the news because of some wrong reasons where the commentators have stirred a controversy by their comments on air.
What is the full story?
Whenever Karnataka plays, it automatically becomes a high profile game which is why this game against Baroda was telecasted on Hotstar across the country. During the 7th over of Baroda’s second inning, both the on air commentators were appreciating Sunil Gavaskar for his contribution to Hindi language as the prominent figure in the commentary box is often seen speaking his mind in the Hindi commentary.
But one of those two commentators went overboard when he said ” Hindustan me har Hindustani ko Hindi aani chahiye. Ye hamari maatri bhasha hai. Isse badi bhasha hamare liye nahi hai ( Every Indian in this country must know Hindi. It is our mother tongue. There is no language bigger than this for us). ”
It didn’t stop here. Sunil Doshi, who was a popular and vintage Radio commentator once was sitting on the other chair. He went on to agree with his colleague and said he gets very angry when Indian cricketers say they feel proud to speak Hindi. ” Arey bhai, Bharat me rehte hain, Bharat ki bhasha hi bolenge, Usme garv ki kya baat hai (They live in India and speak the language of India, what’s there to feel proud about). ”
Here is the video of the entire conversation.

When the people, especially from the non Hindi speaking regions heard and understood this, they filled Twitter with tweets protesting the comments made by these two gentlemen and they requested BCCI and Star Sports India to remove both of them from commentary panel by accusing them of imposing Hindi and making racial comments.
When the commentators heard about the matter going out of hand, they immediately apologized for their comments giving an explanation.
