Ever since the stump mics have been invented, their main purpose has been to catch the sound of batsmen edging a ball behind but over the years, the purpose has changed from catching nicks sound to catch batsmen, wicket keepers and other close-in fielders sledging. In this article, we compile 5 of the best instances when cricketers have said something extremely funny that has been caught on stump mic.
Tim Paine’s Babysitter comment
When India toured Australia in the summer of 2018-19, the verbal battle between the players of these two teams caught as many eyeballs as the actual cricket action did. It all started with India’s wicket keeper Rishabh Pant provoking Pat Cummins in a funny way to play out of his character which we will talk about later. This incident is from Melbourne Test which was the 3rd Test of the series.
” Tell you what big MS (Dhoni) is back in the One Day squad, Do you mind getting into the Hurricanes? We need a batter. You fancy that, surely. You’ll be extending your Aussie holiday. Beautiful town Hobart too, Kitchen, nice apartment, waterfront. Have him over for dinner.
“Do you babysit? I can take my wife to the movies while you watch the kids.”
When Rishabh Pant came to the crease joining Mayank Agarwal in India’s second inning, Aussie wicket keeper captain Tim Paine tried to distract him by giving him a lucrative offer to spend a holiday in Hobart, which is Paine’s hometown and the franchise he plays for in the Big Bash League. He offered Pant to Babysit his kids while he would be out with his wife for hangout.

A few days later, Pant accepted Paine’s offer to babysit his kids as he went to his home before the start of Sydney Test to spend time with his babies.
Rishabh Pant’s Temporary captain remark
While Paine offered Pant to babysit his kids, the offer which Pant later went on to accept, he didn’t take this sledging too lightly during the game and he decided to give Paine a taste of his medicine when he came to bat in Australia’s final inning.
” We’ve got a special guest today. Come on Monki (Murali Vijay), we’ve got a special guest. Have you heard about ‘ Temporary Captain ‘, ever? Have you heard about temporary captain ever? I’m seeing it. You don’t need anything to get him out boy. “

Chasing 393, Australia were 5-135 in their second inning when Paine came to bat for Australia. Indians, Pant in particular was irked with Paine’s chatter in the stump mic in the two Tests that had gone by. India later won the Melbourne Test and completed a historic series win in Australia for the first time as the Sydney Test ended in a draw.
Pant asking Cummins to hit a 6
Rishabh Pant was again involved in the scheme of the things as the chirpy little wicket keeper tried to provoke Pat Cummins who wasn’t taking any risk at that particular stage of the game. India had set Australia a target of 323 runs and with 161-6, India had a strong grip on the game provided that tailenders would be dealt with quickly. Cummins had faced 11 balls and he still hadn’t scored a run. That’s when Pant decided to have some fun with his IPL teammate and what happened after that was just hilarious.
” Come on Pattie (Pat), not easy to play here man. Show some sixes here come on. It’s not easy to survive here, someone is not seeing (the ball). It’s gonna be difficult. Not putting away, not putting away (even) bad balls come on. “

The Aussie tailenders did hang on for quite a bit and they stretched the match to a period when India started to panic. India eventually won the game but Cummins led the Australian fight with his gritty 28 which came in 121 balls. The constant chatter from behind the wicket continued throughout the series.
Where was your mouth at Cape Town when we had a full seaming attack? – Mark Boucher
This incident goes as back as 2005 when Zimbawe was touring South Africa for the Test series. After winning the first Test in Cape Town, South Africa were in a comfortable position to win the second Test in Centurion as well and that’s when Proteas wicket keeper Mark Boucher decided to say a few words to his counterpart Tatenda Taibu who was having a poor series till then.
” The only time you’re looking to score runs is when you’ve got one seamer on the field.
After Taibu plays a defensive cover drive, Boucher sledges him even further by saying ” That’s a big shot Tatenda “.
” Where was your mouth when we were at the Cape Town when we had a full seaming attack? We’ve got one seamer and all of a sudden you’ve got a big mouth man.
Boucher didn’t stop here as he reminded Taibu of his bad average in that series. ” What are you averaging? You must know your average. 9 or 10? I think it’s 9.5, so we’ll give you 10. ”
Oye Bh***ke idhar dekh le, udhar dekh raha hai – MS Dhoni
Known as Captain Cool, Mahendra Singh Dhoni showed that he too loses his cool at times and it was one rare instance when his batting partner Manish Pandey was at the receiving end of his wrath. In the second T20 between India and South Africa in 2018, Dhoni and Pandey stitched a long partnership in the middle. Both of them scored 50s but what caught people’s attention was Dhoni swearing at Manish Pandey for apparently ignoring him.
” Oye bh******, idhar dekh le, udhar dekh rha hai. Apna ho gaya bas. ( Look here, What are you looking at once done with completing your run? ) “
Though both their half centuries went in vain as South Africa chased down India’s total but this moment became a meme content for social media users for sure.
