During the third and final ODI of between England and Ireland, former Irish player and now English captain Eoin Morgan broke MS Dhoni’s record of hitting most sixes as captain in international cricket. Morgan, in his inning of 106 hit 15 fours and 4 sixes and in that process, went past Dhoni’s 211 sixes as captain.
Morgan now has 212 sixes in 163 matches only while MS Dhoni took 332 games to hit 211 sixes. In this article, we take a look at captains who have hit most number of sixes in international cricket.
Chris Gayle : 134
If anyone can hit sixes in his sleep, it would be Chris Gayle without any doubt. The Jamaican boss, in fact the universe boss has most number of sixes hit by a batsman in international cricket. He hit 534 sixes and leads the second best Afridi by 68 sixes.
The fact that as a captain, he only has 134 sixes has to go down to his unsuccessful stint as a WI captain. He didn’t lead West Indies in too many matches, in fact only 90 matches in 3 years. West Indies lost 49 and won only 26 matches when he was in charge of this team but keeping aside his captaincy skills, his batting prowess were never in doubt.
Brendon McCullum : 170
Former New Zealand captain and a destructive batsman, Brendon McCullum hit a total of 170 sixes as captain in International cricket which makes him stand at 4 in this list. McCullum gave the cricketing world a whole new template about how to approach the batting. Bazz, as they famously say captained New Zealand in a total of 121 international matches and scored 170 sixes.
The six hitting prodigy hit 398 sixes as a player alone in international cricket and he is also the 4th highest six hitter in the history of cricket.
Ricky Ponting : 171
Ricky Ponting came from a slightly conservative and subdued style of batting era although he wasn’t any of these when it came down to his captaincy. The retired Aussie captain hit 171 sixes with his willow in a total of 324 matches as a captain. The reason behind him taking more number of matches was that he played a lot of Test cricket where players don’t have to hit sixes more often.
Ponting had a total of 246 sixes to his name as a batsman.
MS Dhoni : 211
Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni held on to this record for long unless Eoin Morgan broke it yesterday. Dhoni led India in 332 international games and hit 211 sixes in those 332 matches. 60 of those matches were Tests, 200 ODIs and 72 T2OIs. Dhoni has been a very fluent and majestic six hitter as a lower order batsman and it is evident from the fact that he has a total of 359 sixes in his international career which places him at number 5 only below Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, Rohit Sharma and Brendon McCullum.
Eoin Morgan : 212*
English captain Eoin Morgan is the only active cricketer in this list even though MS Dhoni and Chris Gayle have not announced their retirements officially as yet. Morgan has a great chance to consolidate this record as there are still a fair share of cricket and leadership skills left in him. The born Irishman has hit 212 sixes from 163 matches as captain till date and the fact that he only plays limited overs cricket for England is a major reason why he has got to this record so quickly.
As a batsman though, Morgan has hit 328 sixes and is 24 sixes behind Jayasuriya and 31 sixes behind MS Dhoni.
