It is never easy to score 100s in T20 cricket given the different circumstances players have to bat under and the risk factor involved and it gets backed by the number that over the 12 years of IPL, we have seen a total of only 34 batsmen scoring 58 100s in IPL cricket. Out of those 34, only 12 have gone on to repeat their 100s while only 4 batsmen have scored a ton for four or more than 4 times in IPL.
In this article, we will talk about those four batsmen with 4 or more 100s in IPL.
1. Chris Gayle : 6
Scoring T20 100s might be difficult for other batsmen but not for Christopher Henry Gayle who just has to blast his way to reach a 100. Gayle has most number of 100s in IPL. He has hit 6 100s in 125 IPL games.
Gayle scored his first 100 when he was signed by RCB almost midway through the tournament after getting unsold in the IPL 2011 Auction. He announced his return with a bang against his former team when he stormed KKR bowlers to all parks at Eden Garden. He scored 102*(55) in that game and then hit another century against Kings XI Punjab in the same season.
Gayle’s next century came against Delhi Daredevils at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in 2012 where he scored 128 not out off 62 balls. And then in the next season, who could forget his mammoth 175* against Pune Warriors India where he broke all sorts of batting record. It was the fastest IPL 100 ever and it came in just 30 balls. Gayle scored one more 100 for Royal Challengers Bangalore before moving to KXIP and it came against the same KXIP side in 2015 at Chinnaswamy. His 6th and final 100 came against SunRisers Hyderabad in 2018.
2. Virat Kohli : 5
Even though a T20 International 100 has been eluding him over the years, RCB captain and one of the dear friends of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli sits at the second position with most number of IPL 100s. And it is more staggering that he has achieved all of it in just 2 IPL seasons.
Till the beginning of 2016, Kohli had no century in IPL but he colored that season with 4 IPL centuries altogether. He had an unbelievable season and it shows from the statistics. 973 runs and 4 100s, way more than a batsman could ask for before the beginning of a season.
Kohli scored his first 100 against Gujarat Lions in Rajkot. It was slightly slow, it took him 63 balls but he kept on getting better game after game. His next 100 came in a chase, a classic Virat Kohli chase. When RPS set a target of 192, Virat Kohli carried the load of the difficult chase on his shoulder throughout. This 100 came in 58 balls and sealed the deal for RCB. His 3rd 100 of the season came against Gujarat Lions at home but he saved his best for the last. In a must win rain curtailed game, Kohli scored a 43 balls 100 against KXIP. The match was restricted to only 15 overs due to rain and he was able to score a 100 even in a 15 overs per side match.
Kohli hit his 5th IPL 100 last year at Eden Garden against KKR where he accelerated just at the correct time to earn a 58 balls century.
3. David Warner : 4
David Warner has been the most consistent performer in IPL since 2015 but he has never been short of laurels even before. The Aussie pocket dynamite didn’t use to be this unbelievably consistent for Delhi Daredevils but 2 out of his 4 100s have come for his former side.
Warner scored his 1st IPL ton against KKR in Delhi in 2010. He scored 107 from 69 balls in a sedate but sensible inning on a slow Kotla wicket and helped Delhi post a total of 177 which they later went on to defend by 40 runs. He then scored his next century against Deccan Chargers in 2012. Warner then scored his nxt and 3rd IPL 100 after a gap of 5 Years when his side took on KKR at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium,Hyderabad which helped SRH overhaul the KKR challenge. He scored 126 from 59 balls in that particular game. His fourth and final IPL 100 came last season against Royal Challengers Bangalore when he along with his opening partner, Jonny Bairstow had a field day at the office as both of them scored 100s in the same game becoming the second pair to score 100s in the same match after Virat Kohli and AB De villiers in 2016.
4. Shane Watson : 4
Much like his Australian teammate, Shane Watson has scored 2 hundreds each for two different teams. Watson has scored 4 IPL 100s in 134 IPL matches and we take a look at each one of them.
Watson scored his first 100 playing for Rajasthan Royals against CSK back in 2013. His 58 balls 101 helped RR chase the total put by CSK. A couple of years later at Brabourne Stadium against KKR, Watson scored his second IPL 100. His 59 balls 104 ranged in the same impact as his first 100. Later, while playing for Chennai Super Kings, Watson scored 2 more centuries in the same season. Riding on the opportunities given to him by the RR fielders, Watson went on to score his 3rd IPL 100 in 2018 but he saved his best for the last. His 4th 100 came in the final of IPL 2018where he single handedly won the match and season for CSK with his 57 balls 117 at Wankhede. The best part about that knock was he started the inning almost at the zero pace, without any rhythm and still managed to score at a strike rate of over 200.
