IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals released 8 players and after trading Robin Uthappa to Chennai Super Kings later, they now have the purse of 37.85 crores to go with in the auction. They have a minimum of 9 players to buy. Only KXIP have a bigger purse than them with 53.2 crore rupees and with having such heavy purses and lots of players to buy, it is quite obvious that these two teams along with RCB will have a busy day in the auction targeting a lot of players. In this article, we take a look at 3 players Rajasthan Royals should target in the IPL Auction to build a balanced team.

Rajasthan Royals have a great T20 pacer in Jofra Archer but that’s pretty much it about them when it comes to bowling. Kartik Tyagi was good in his debut season but he is still young and will take time in handling responsibilities better. They urgently need someone who can support Archer in both powerplay and at death. What we saw in IPL 2020 was that Archer was creating all the pressure from his end and others were failing to maintain that pressure and even releasing it from the other end by bad bowling.
RR needs to target Chris Morris, who had a great IPL 2020 playing for RCB. Morris can bowl at any stage, just like Archer and it will allow Kartik Tyagi to grow as the third fast bowler without feeling too much burden. However, the only concern with Morris is his fitness. He hadn’t played 8 out of 17 matches last year which is why RCB released him. If RR buys him and he stays fit, he will be of a great value to them.
Ever since RR released K Gowtham, they haven’t had a frontline off spinner in their squad. Riyan Parag has bowled some off spin occasionally but not enough to be counted upon. They had Shreyas Gopal and Rahul Tewatia as their two main spinners in IPL 2020 – both leg spinners and having both of them in the side makes the bowling attack a bit one dimensional.
For example, if they want someone who can take the ball away from the left handers, they have to rely on the googlies bowled by these two. In this auction, they can sort out this problem and bring a variety to their bowling attack by buying the experienced Harbhajan Singh. Harbhajan is past his prime and has been released by Chennai Super Kings but he can still have a lot to offer with his off spin and lower order hitting. He didn’t feature in IPL 2020 due to personal reasons but he had a successful season with ball in 2019 where he picked 16 wickets in 11 matches bowling with an economy of only 7.09. Bhajji, as they say looks a safe bet among the options in this auction. This would only be a short term option considering the fact that in 2022, we will see mega auction where teams will have lot more options to choose from.
If they want someone younger for the future fulfilling same needs, they can also try Jalaj Saxena.
Vishnu Vinod/Shahrukh Khan
The third weakness they have is a bit of a tricky one. It is in the batting and the player they need to fill the void depends upon the batting order. Since Robin Uthappa has been traded to CSK, they might need a new opener to partner Ben Stokes. Ang given that they have Stokes, Buttler and Archer in the team with aiming to buy Morris or any other overseas fast bowler, they’d ideally want an Indian opener for that role.Kerala’s Vishnu Vinod is that player they can try for that role. He can also bat in the middle order like he did for Kerala in Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy when Mohammad Azharuddeen and Sanju Samson opened.
However, if Royals want to go with the combination of Stokes- Samson or Buttler- Samson or Buttler- Stokes (highly unlikely), they’d need a player to bat in the middle order and in that case Tamil Nadu’s Shahrukh Khan can be a good option. Shahrukh showed some great temperament and played a pivotal role in Tamil Nadu’s SMAT win.
These are the 3 players Rajasthan Royals should target in the IPL Auction.
